Outer wear is both functional, beating the cold and wet weather, and boldly macho in black leather. Recent history has provided the inspiration for jackets this fall and winter. In contrast to the heavy black leather jackets, a lighter jacket in perforated leather is in vogue this fall. In keeping with the less masculine theme, these jackets come in vintage black, brown or grey. This is a most elegant look and adds class to any outfit. Quite different is the very masculine bomber jacket. The inspiration for these jackets comes from the protective clothing worn by pilots during the Second World War when they flew planes that had no protection against the elements. The jackets are very full and end at the waist. The trimmings, such as white or colored trimmings on the shoulders and sleeves, differentiate this season from the traditional jackets. This is a jacket with many zippers so look for one on which the zippers are bold and classy. Another version of the bomber jacket that also presents a very masculine look is the biker jacket that has been popular on the catwalks for this season. The double-breasted jacket also has nostalgic origins but for the current mode, you must select a fitted jacket. The younger crowd are wearing extremely tight-fitting jackets that show off a slender waist. The double-breasted jacket in a formal, sombre fabric together with a formal pair of trousers makes an excellent outfit for an evening. However, put a double-breasted jacket in cotton with a stylish pair of jeans and you will wow the casual scene. Designers have taken double-breasted jackets into the realm of trench coats this season. The trench coat is tinged with the horrors of war when heavy, warm jackets were necessary for survival in the trenches on the battlefield, but it was the apparel of brave men. The new trench coat soaks up the masculinity associated with its origins but moves sharply away from the awful dingy fabric of the times. The trench coat comes in strikingly beautiful fabrics of unusually pale, neutral colors, and in lightweight nylon, polyester or cotton that allows the coat to fall effortlessly into its natural folds. Belts and buckles dominate the quiet colors of the longer jacket and add zest to the chic shorter trench coat. Look for jackets with contrasting fabrics and textures on collars and cuffs. Ribbed trimmings are chic with red and green being favored colors. Collars are often wore high and close around the neck. Multiple pockets and several large zippers are popular features as far as trimming is concerned. The trendsetters are in the fortunate position of having a wide selection of jackets this season but the main looks in vogue will be the manly leather bomber jackets and double-breasted jackets.
