Genus: Phlogiellus POCOCK 1897
The genus Phlogiellus currently contain a mish mash of smaller theraphosids that many of which may in fact belong to other already established genera. This is debatable however, time will tell. Even though the first species described was Phlogiellus inermis Ausserer 1871, it was not until 1897 that Pocock discovered the new genus and so the genotype for the group became P.atriceps Pocock 1897. The Australian fauna from this group are found in the Northern Wet Tropics region of Qld and it is still uncertain how many species are found here, their presence in Australia was first noted by Raven in 2000. The Phlogiellus differ from other Selenocosmiinae in that the lyra is often reduced in size, a third claw is always present on leg IV, tarsal scopula on legs III&IV or just IV are divided and the fovea is smaller in width to the eye tubercle (usually, although not in all cases).
