SPECIES INFORMATION

Genus: Selenotholus HOGG 1902

The Selenotholus are another endemic genus to Australia and additionally, like the Selenotypus , are currently monotypic, the only species currently described being S.foelschei Hogg 1902. The genotype is from the Northern Territory and at the time of it's original description was noted as being very similar in form to S.stirlingi Hogg 1901, with the exception it possessed a recurved foveal groove. However, it seems the recurved fovea is not a stable condition, so is perhaps not the best character to define a new genus. That said, it seems there are other characters that support the spider S.foelschei it's own generic placement and like most well researched genera, this group, Selenotholus will undoubtedly expand in species numbers as Dr Raven revises our local fauna.
